U.K. May retail sales beat expectations, up 1.4%

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- May retail sales for the U.K. exceeded analysts expectations, data from the Office of National Statistics said Thursday. Retail sales in May rose 1.4% compared with April this year, while sales jumped 2.4% on an annual basis. Analysts polled by Factset Research expected a 1% rise month-on-month. The total amount spent in the U.K. retail sector between April 29 and May 26 rose to an estimated non-seasonally adjusted 26.4 billion pounds ($41.38 billion) from 26 billion pounds in April.
