12 dead, 50 wounded in Colorado shooting

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- The death toll stands at 12 at mid-morning Friday after a gunman opened fire at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." At least 50 people were wounded in the shooting. Authorities identified James Holmes, 24, as the suspect, according to various reports. There has been speculation that Holmes may have been trying to emulate the Batman character. President Barack Obama called the shooting "horrific and tragic" and said he was "shocked and saddened" by the event, according to reports. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney to call for gun control. "... Maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country," Bloomberg said during his radio show on WOR-AM Friday. Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc. , said it was "deeply saddened" about the incident. The studio has canceled the Paris premiere of the film.
