Hirono win U.S. Senate primary in Hawaii
BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. Rep. Mazie K. Hirono has won Hawaii's Democratic primary election for the state's open U.S. Senate seat, beating former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, according to Associated Press on Sunday.
Hirono will face former Gov. Linda Lingle in November. Lingle, a Republican, beat Hirono 10 years ago to become governor, eventually serving two terms.
Hawaii, historically a Democratic stronghold, has emerged as a key race for Republicans, who hope to snag the seat as part of their quest to regain control of the U.S. Senate.
The seat is currently occupied by the retiring Sen. Daniel Akaka, who was appointed in 1990 after fellow Democrat Spark Matsunaga died in office. Akaka was later elected to three terms.
