The attorneys general of California, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina on Friday joined an antitrust lawsuit to block JetBlue's (JBLU) proposed $3.8 billion purchase of Spirit Airlines (SAVE). The four attorneys general are joining a suit by the U.S. Department of Justice and the attorneys general of Massachusetts, New York and Washington, D.C., that was filed earlier this month. At that time, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said the proposed merger would result in higher airfares and reduced competition. JetBlue Chief Executive Robin Hayes has said the merger would create a competitor to larger U.S. airlines.
