U.S. Dollar Index Remains Strong
The S&P 500 recently dipped into negative territory with a loss of 0.1% but has bounced back to a gain of 0.1%. Today's session has been without leadership from the heavily-weighted financials (+0.1%) and health care (-0.2%) sectors. The U.S. dollar has been worth a watch today. The U.S. Dollar Index is up 0.4% to 97.03 and is seeking its eighth consecutive advance, which has the index marking a fresh high for 2019.The recent strength deserves attention because it puts the Dollar Index within 1.0% of its high from 2018. An extension past that high is likely to invite concerns about the earnings prospects of U.S. multinational companies and lead to renewed worries about the impact of dollar strength on emerging markets.
