UPDATE: Jeff Bezos: National Enquirer threatened more photos if he investigated political motivations

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) founder and Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in a blog post Thursday afternoon that the National Enquirer threatened to publish more scandalous photos of him if he continued to investigate potential political motivations for the publication of a previous set of photos. "In the AMI letters I'm making public, you will see the precise details of their extortionate proposal: They will publish the personal photos unless Gavin de Becker and I make the specific false public statement to the press that we 'have no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AMI's coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces,'" Bezos said in a personal post on Medium (https://medium.com/@jeffreypbezos/no-thank-you-mr-pecker-146e3922310f). The Enquirer has published photos Bezos shared privately with his mistress; Bezos and his wife recently filed for divorce. Bezos notes that AMI, the owner of the Enquirer, has been accused of helping President Donald Trump hide allegations of an affair and pro-Saudi Arabia dealings. Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, said that he had enlisted de Becker "to learn how those texts were obtained, and to determine the motives for the many unusual actions taken by the Enquirer." Bezos also shared a series of emails that he says backs up his contention that AMI offered not to publish more photos if he dropped his investigation of the company's political motivations.
