UPDATE: These stocks rose the most as Trump backed off (a bit) from tariffs

Apple leads a broad stock market rally as investors breathe a sigh of relief

U.S. stocks staged a broad rally Tuesday as the tone of the U.S.-China trade conflict changed, at least temporarily.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended with a gain of 373 points (up 1.4%), trimming an earlier rise of as much as 520 points (2%). The S&P 500 fared even better, jumping 1.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite Index was strongest of all, with a 2% increase.

The price action followed an announcement by the office of the U.S. Trade Representative that some tariffs the U.S. had planned to place on imports from China on Sept. 1 would be delayed until Dec. 15 (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/trump-delays-tariffs-on-chinese-made-laptops-cell-phones-until-christmas-2019-08-13) and that some tariffs would be removed entirely. President Trump also talked about a "very good call with China (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/trump-slams-china-over-farm-trade-as-us-delays-tariffs-on-computers-cell-phones-2019-08-13)."

Apple (AAPL) led the Dow 30, with the shares rising 4.2%. The delay of tariffs for several categories of electronics removed "a major near-term dark cloud" for the company, ahead of the launch of three new iPhone models expected in September, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives wrote in a note to clients.
