Apple reportedly buys virtual-reality startup NextVR

Apple Inc. (AAPL) has acquired Southern California virtual-reality startup NextVR, according to multiple reports Thursday. 9to6Mac first reported the deal (https://9to5mac.com/2020/05/14/apple-nextr-ar-headset/), and Apple later confirmed it to Bloomberg News (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-14/apple-acquires-startup-nextvr-to-gain-virtual-reality-content?sref=Oeyjq8by). NextVR provides live content, such as sports and concerts, for VR headsets. "NextVR is heading in a new direction," the company's website said Thursday, though it did not name Apple. A purchase price was not announced, but 9to5Mac reported it was expected to be around $100 million. Apple rarely comments on acquisitions, past a boilerplate statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." Separately, MacRumors reported Thursday (https://www.macrumors.com/2020/05/14/kuo-apple-glasses-2022-new-ipads-2020/) that TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to launch augmented-reality glasses as soon as 2022.
