Apple Inc. (AAPL) has acquired Southern California virtual-reality startup NextVR, according to multiple reports Thursday. 9to6Mac first reported the deal ( /), and Apple later confirmed it to Bloomberg News ( ). NextVR provides live content, such as sports and concerts, for VR headsets. "NextVR is heading in a new direction," the company's website said Thursday, though it did not name Apple. A purchase price was not announced, but 9to5Mac reported it was expected to be around $100 million. Apple rarely comments on acquisitions, past a boilerplate statement: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." Separately, MacRumors reported Thursday ( /) that TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to launch augmented-reality glasses as soon as 2022.
