Apple unveils iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, its first 5G phones

1:51 pm ET October 13, 2020 (MarketWatch)

By Emily Bary

Both phones will have dual cameras

Apple Inc. introduced the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 mini at a virtual event Tuesday. These phones are the first in Apple's lineup to feature 5G connectivity. They're also the first iPhones to use Apple's A14 Bionic chip, which is built on 5-nanometer process technology.

The new iPhones will work on sub-6 5G networks and, in the U.S., they will also work with mmWave 5G. Sub-6 5G is more widely available, though it's less of a step up from 4G networks. The mmWave type of 5G is faster but has more limited use cases at the outset as it's primarily beneficial in dense outdoor settings.

Apple (AAPL) said that 5G connectivity and the new chip will enable better gaming experiences, helping to bring the popular "League of Legends" game to the iPhone. The company will stop giving users power adapters and new headphones when they purchase new iPhones, which the company is billing as a move toward becoming more sustainable.

Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have dual cameras that will allow for wider aperture and better low-light photography. They'll be available in black, white, red, green, and blue color options. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini will start at $699, while the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 will begin at $799. Apple said that the iPhone 12 mini is smaller and lighter than the iPhone 8, while boasting a larger display size.

Apple's stock is down 2.3% in Tuesday afternoon trading.
