Chipotle price target raised based on long-term growth potential but shares fall as delivery becomes a headwind

1:32 pm ET October 22, 2020 (MarketWatch)

Analysts at BTIG raised their price target on Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. (CMG) to $1,450 from $1,375 after the fast-casual chain reported third-quarter earnings that beat expectations. BTIG maintained its buy stock rating. While analysts there and at other research groups are upbeat about the prospects for Chipotle due to its digital efforts, menu innovation and other factors, shares fell 4.6% in Thursday trading (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/chipotle-sales-bounce-back-from-pandemic-decline-but-the-stock-is-falling-11603311949). "We see some near-term potential headwinds related to delivery, as this lower-margin channel has jumped to nearly 25% of sales, though it's not significant enough to alter our view as our favorable long-term sales and earnings outlook keeps us positive on shares," BTIG analysts led by Peter Saleh wrote. Chipotle stock has rallied 55.7% for the year to date while the S&P 500 index is up 6.7% for the period.
