Companies typically compete on fulfillment speed, but these two retail giants have partnered for same- and next-day delivery

Walmart Inc. announced on Wednesday that Home Depot Inc. has partnered with the retail giant to use its same-day and next-day delivery service, Walmart GoLocal.

GoLocal is Walmart's (WMT) "delivery-as-a-service" business, which provides speedy fulfillment for other businesses.

Home Depot will roll out delivery with Walmart GoLocal, first in select markets over the coming weeks then across an expanded number of markets through the end of the year. Items that can easily fit into a car like paint and tools will be among those eligible for the service.

"This partnership brings us even closer to our goal of offering same-day or next-day delivery to 90 percent of the U.S. population," said Stephanie Smith, senior vice president of supply chain for The Home Depot, in a statement.

Home Depot (HD) saw digital sales soar 86% in fiscal 2020 with more than half of orders fulfilled in stores, according to the announcement.

One of the areas that retailers are competing in is fulfillment speed, with businesses using their store fleets to get orders to customers quickly and at a reduced cost. Target Corp. (TGT) has talked about how it uses its stores to effectively get items into customers hands, with pickup services popular with customers.

Services like Instacart and DoorDash (DASH) have also become popular third-party choices for companies aiming to deliver orders more quickly.

Walmart says the recently-launched GoLocal can provide this kind of service "at a competitive price."

Walmart stock has fallen 3% for the year to date. Home Depot is up 27.4%. And the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 14.2% for the period.
