"I am delighted to welcome Bill to Wells Fargo," said Scharf. "I have known Bill and worked with him for many years and know we will benefit from his unique background. My experience with Bill is that he does not think like a banker. He is a strong voice who brings perspectives from the public sector that we in business do not generally have but are critical for us as we make decisions. The addition of Bill and this role to our Operating Committee is an important statement that we want different perspectives on our senior-most management committee and that we will think more broadly about our stakeholders as we move forward."

Daley has extensive experience in both the public sector and business. His distinguished career includes two cabinet-level appointments -- Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama and Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration. In addition, he served as Vice Chairman of BNY Mellon and a member of the bank's Executive Committee, as Vice Chairman and a member of the Executive Committee at JPMorgan Chase, and as President of SBC Communications (now AT&T).

Daley said, "I am excited to be able to help with Wells Fargo's continued transformation and to help shape the bank's relationship with its customers, regulators and the U.S. public. I look forward to working with a talented executive team to make the new vision for the bank a reality."

Daley will manage a team of more than 780 people globally and will have responsibility for Corporate Communications; Government Relations & Public Policy; Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility; and Corporate Philanthropy & Community Relations.

William M. Daley biography

A lawyer by profession, Daley joined Amalgamated Bank of Chicago as Vice Chairman in 1989 and served as President and Chief Operating Officer of the bank from 1990 to 1993. He then returned to the practice of law as a partner at Mayer, Brown & Platt and was appointed to the board of Fannie Mae by President Bill Clinton in 1993. From 1997 to 2000, Daley was Secretary of Commerce in the Clinton administration. He stepped down to run Al Gore's campaign for President in 2000. In 2001, Daley was appointed President of SBC Communications, leaving there to join JPMorgan Chase in 2004. At JPMorgan Chase, Daley was Vice Chairman and a member of the Executive Committee with a number of responsibilities, including leading the bank's corporate responsibility program. In 2010, Daley was appointed Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama, a post he held until 2012. Daley joined BNY Mellon as Vice Chairman in 2019, where he had responsibility for Government Affairs, Communications, Philanthropy and Corporate Social Responsibility. He was also a member of the bank's Executive Committee.
